Literacy delay in children

Literacy refers to the ability to read and write. There are certain preliteracy skills, such as phonological awareness, that are essential for literacy development. Phonological awareness refers to the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the sounds (phonemes) in words.

A child with literacy difficulties may present with difficulties in:

  • Recognising letters and their associated sound
  • Sounding out
  • Blending sounds to make words
  • Spelling (both verbally and written)
  • Taking a significant amount of time to read small passages
  • Understanding written passages (reading comprehension)

Literacy difficulties may exist in combination with a language or speech delay, or in isolation from any other difficulties.
